Several months ago we expressed a form of sympathy for Ann Coulter's concern that as a conscientious conservative; one like Rush, Sean Hannity, and others of their redoubtable ilk, that she could not be arrested. She had written of such issues with tongue firmly implanted in cheek, believeing of course that no good, red-blooded conservative American, should be arrested or even subjected to the vagaries of law. And, for awhile thereafter, Ms. Coulter disappeared from public view. But now she has a new tome (another in her series of liberal bashing editorials in book form), and she has achieved a new low. Indeed, Ms. Coulter has unabashedly attacked the wives of several of 9/11's victims, claiming they are greedy, avaricious, and (unbelievably) glad to be rid of their slain spouses. And the genesis of this assault is, we understand, because these women were among those who called for a congressional investigation of the administration's handling of the 9/11 situation. Bear in mind, of course, that Ms. Coulter is among the administration toadies who believe, in concert with their leader, that they should be questioned about nothing.
They have, they contend, the responsibility for fighting the war on terrorism, and in the process they have convinced themselves (if almost no one else) that where this process is concerned, anything goes. And now that even includes pernicious attacks on innocent women whose only crime was insisting that the government provide accountability for their slaughtered husbands.
Ann Coulter is, we say with absolutely no fear of reprisal, a semi-driveling idiot, a moron, and far worse, the Medusa of the twenty first century. She has no apparent conscience, no concern for the numerous victims of 9/11, and affection only for conservatives whose caustic view of the world is in synch with hers. And she has even been so intemperate as to suggest personal disdain for the First Amendment. She makes it clear that anyone with even the hint of a liberal bias is not worthy of (American) citizenship; she clearly contends that questioning anything about the current administration is tantamount to treason, and she could care less about how the rest of the world perceives this country. It is obvious that she believes this is the ONLY country of merit (while contending concurrently that many of her countrymen are too worthless for words), and she would have no compunctions about wiping out most of the other nations on the globe.
We are obliged to wonder to what extent Ms. Coulter's conservative contemporaries are still in league with her? It was one thing to liken "libs" to fuzzy thinkers and nerds. No one really objected to her childish prattling because, whether she liked it or not, no one really took her seriously. But now she has attained new depths of degradation, and her support base (whatever it really was) is probably receding. No one, after all, can condone her one-sided, mean spirited, thoughtless broadsides against folks who wanted nothing more than answers to obvious questions. And if there are a few who might, it is unlikely they are the high ranking party pols she likes to suck up to.
Ms. Coulter should know that those who wield swords are sometimes disposed to fall on them. She has done so...........Fortunately, only she is the worse for wear.
